Wild Onions Feast

March 16 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Steeped in Tradition “Wild Onion Feast”

The Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club Higher Education Scholarship Fundraiser

Spring is near and excitement is in the air. It is time to go to the creek where the blanket of brown leaves protects the wild onions.  Even the girls from the female seminaries gathered wild onions (without permission), going together to forage for their first green of spring.  There was so much excitement! They used their hands to rake the brown blanket of leaves back to reveal the tender green blades of wild onions peeking out.  Carefully they were dug with a sharpened stick to leave the root system for the next year’s harvest.   The wild onions grow close to running creek water, where we can wash the dirt from the roots.

Digging only enough Sassafras roots to boil for a special aromatic tea, and home we go to clean the wild onions, gather eggs, and prepare a feast.  This tradition has been shared with family, friends, and neighbors, to bring the community together.

The Wild Onion Feast celebrates the beginning of Spring and the gathering of our Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club members together, along with community to raise money for our Higher Education Scholarship Program.
